Encounter Resolution

An encounter occurs any time the PCs cross paths with an NPC or Monster and there is the potential for combat (e.g., in a dungeon or wilderness setting).

PHASE 1: Initiate Encounter

  1. Surprise
  2. Distance
  3. Reaction
  4. Morale (if applicable)

PHASE 2: Surprise

  • Skip if there is no Surprise among combatants.
  • Actors that surprise foes make declarations and actions are resolved (see PHASE 3: Combat below for details)

PHASE 3: Combat

Refer to Combat Actions for a list of potential actions in combat.

  1. Declarations (GM then players)
  2. Roll Initiative (d6)
  3. Follow the Order of Operations in Combat (Coming Soon)

PHASE 4: End Encounter

This phase will vary based on the outcome of combat:

  • Pursuit — If combatants fled, surviving foes may pursue. (See Pursuit)
  • Turn of Rest — Combatants must rest for one turn after combat or pursuit concludes. No exploration is possible. Characters may bind wounds and use healing magic.
